Zen Peacemakers
Zen Master Bernie Glassman’s teachings of the three tenets of Not Knowing, Bearing Witness and Taking Action have become my guideposts for living each moment. The Bearing Witness Retreats held in places of past or present human suffering e.g. — sitting on the grounds of Auschwitz, on the streets of the Bowery, with Native Americans on the “Rez” and with survivors and perpetrators of Rwanda’s genocide — have been an incredibly powerful way to experience a transformative opening of the heart and the oneness of life.
Grant has studied with many Tibetan, Zen and Vipassana teachers; however after meeting Bernie Glassman at a Bearing Witness Retreat at Auschwitz in 2010, Grant began working closely with Bernie and the Zen Peacemakers’ three tenets:
  • Not-Knowing, thereby giving up fixed ideas about ourselves and the universe
  • Bearing Witness to the joy and suffering of the world
  • Taking Actions that arise from Not-Knowing and Bearing Witness.
Bernie recognized Grant as his successor on April 30, 2016.
